Now that Gianni and I are able to have some free time in-between his treatments we thought we’d try an easy hike in Italy. Crystal and Ariana my granddaughter joined us as well. I’m hoping this will be the first of many.
This scenic marsh is located on the Lombardy side of Lake Maggiore just south of Angera and is one of the last patches of flooded forest in the Lombardy region. It is 164 hectares in size and has black alders, natural springs, meadows, ponds, reedbeds, oaks and some small agriculture plots that we saw corn and hay being grown.
The environmental value of Bruschera Marsh has led to it being designated as a site of European importance and inclusion in the “Canneti del Lago Maggiore Special Protection Area”. The northern part of the area is the wettest of the forest with the presence of standing water and enriches the black alders, white willows and reeds with the typical formations of lentic waters.
The central-southern part, on the other hand, is characterized by a mesophilous broad-leaved wood and composed mostly of oak trees. The marsh has many valuable floras, some of the notable ones are water iris, cattail reed and water lilies. It also is a haven for aquatic fauna, migratory birds, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals.
Many birds such as herons, coots, grebes and moorhens’ nest in the region and you may be lucky to see brown kites, swamp hawks or lodolaio falcons in flight. Commonly seen mammals are squirrels, foxes, dormice, shrews and badgers. During our walk we saw a rabbit resting then hop away.
It is believed that in 1776, the scientist Alessandro Volta, discovered flammable gas on a boat trip between the swamp and the lake. This gas is now known as methane.
Access to the marsh is by paths and dirt roads. The hike does state it is stroller friendly but there are definitely some areas that needed two of us to maneuver the stroller over big roots and steep terrain. What is very cool is that the roots are sprayed white so you can see them and not trip over them. Not sure if this is standard practice on Italian hikes but I thought it was a good addition.
Because this is a Marsh, it is not advised to hike this trail during the wet season as the lake may overflow and leave thick mud on the trail. This hike is considered an easy route and I agree with that. It states on my AllTrails APP there is an elevation gain of 83 m for the length of the hike is 6.6 km. We needed to deviate from the route as there was no path where the APP told us so we ended up with an elevation gain of 100 m and a total of 7.18 km which we completed in 1h 39min.
All in all it was a great first hike for Gianni, Crystal, Baby Ariana and I. There are some incredible “across the lake” views of our home town of Arona which we have captured in the video and photos. As well as many photos of our hike in the forest. If you are ever at Lago Maggiore this is a great hike.

Palude di Bruschera
Ora che io e Gianni siamo in grado di avere un po 'di tempo libero tra i suoi trattamenti, abbiamo pensato di provare una facile escursione in Italia. Crystal e mia nipote Ariana sono venute con noi. Spero che questo sia la prima di tanti.
Questa scenografica palude si trova sul lato lombardo del Lago Maggiore a sud dell’abitato di Angera ed è uno degli ultimi lembi di foresta allagata della Lombardia. Ha una superficie di 164 ettari e ha ontani neri, un sisteme di risorgivi, prati, stagni, canneti, e un vasto bosco con alcuni piccoli appezzamenti agricoli che abbiamo visto crescere mais e fieno.
Il valore ambientale del Padule di Bruschera ha portato alla sua designazione come sito di importanza europea e all'inclusione nella "Zona di Protezione Speciale Canneti del Lago Maggiore". La parte settentrionale dell'area è la più umida della foresta con la presenza di acqua stagnante e arricchisce gli ontani neri, gli estesi saliceti, frammisti canneti e cariceti, tutti formazioni tipiche delle acque lentiche.
La parte centro-meridionale, invece, è caratterizzata da un bosco di latifoglie mesofile e con dominanza di querce. La palude ha molte flore preziose, alcune delle più notevoli sono l'iris d'acqua, la tifa e la ninfea. È anche un rifugio per la fauna aquatica, uccelli migratori, anfibi, rettili e piccoli mammiferi.
Molti uccelli come aironi, folaghe, svassi e gallinelle d'acqua nidificano nella regione e potri essere fortunato a vedere nibbi bruni, falchi di palude o falchi lodolaio in volo. I mammiferi più comunii sono scoiattoli, volpi, ghiri, toporagni e tassi. Durante la nostra passeggiate abbiamo visto un coniglio riposare e poi saltare via.
Si ritiene che nel 1776, lo scienziato Alessandro Volta, scoprì gas infiammabile durante una gita in barca tra la palude e il lago. Questo gas è ora noto come metano.
L'accesso alla palude avviene tramite sentieri e strade sterrate. L'escursione afferma che è adatta ai passeggini, ma ci sono sicuramente alcune aree che hanno avuto bisogno di due di noi per manovrare il passeggino su grandi radici e terreni ripidi. Ciò che è molto bello è che le radici sono spruzzate di bianco in modo da poterle vedere. Non sono sicuro che questa sia una pratica standard per le escursioni italiane, ma ho pensato che fosse una buona cosa.
Poiché si tratta di una palude, non è consigliabile percorrere questo sentiero durante la stagione delle piogge poiché il lago potrebbe traboccare e lasciare fango denso sul sentiero. Questa escursione è considerata un percorso facile e sono d'accordo con questo. Afferma che sulla mia APP AllTrails c'è un dislivello di 83 m per la lunghezza dell'escursione è di 6,6 km. Dovevamo deviare dal percorso perché non c'era alcun sentiero in cui l'APP ci ha detto, quindi abbiamo finito con un dislivello di 100 m e un totale di 7,18 km che abbiamo completato in 1h 39min.
Tutto sommato è stata una grande prima escursione per Gianni, Crystal, picola Ariana e io. Ci sono alcune incredibili vedute "attraverso il lago" della nostra città di Arona che ho catturato nel video e nelle foto. Così come molte foto della nostra escursione nella foresta. Se siete mai al Lago Maggiore questa è una grande escursione.
