This day I had the honour to attend the wedding of Alex and Giorgia at the Church of Saints Joseph and Blaise in Carciano, a hamlet of Stresa. I had seen this church on my walks when we spent a couple of months in Stresa. It is a charming church made even more special knowing we were there to celebrate two people beginning their life together. But as beautiful as the wedding was, I couldn’t help but wonder about the history of the church surrounding us.
The story of this church reaches back almost a thousand years. The original Church of San Biagio was reportedly built around the year 1000 but was much closer to the shores of Lake Maggiore. Over the centuries, it was abandoned and eventually fell into ruin. Exactly what happened to it remains uncertain, with local stories suggesting everything from an earthquake to the lake encroaching on the area, or even the plague.
Toward the end of the 18th century, a new church was built farther uphill, where the present-day church stands. Today it is dedicated to both Saint Joseph and Saint Blaise and serves the community of Carciano. The church we see today was enlarged and renovated in 1933, when its distinctive Neo-Gothic façade was added. Its elevated position also gives it beautiful views toward the Borromean Gulf and Lake Maggiore.
In 2025, restoration work was authorized for the decorated interior surfaces of the church, showing that its artistic and historic features continue to receive attention and preservation.
The Italian Church Buildings census lists a separate Oratory of San Biagio at Via Volta 10, as a subsidiary place of worship belonging to the Parish of Saints Joseph and Blaise.
There was something especially meaningful about being inside a church with so many centuries of history while witnessing Alex and Giorgia begin a new chapter of their own. Places like this remind me that history isn't always found in museums or written in books. Sometimes, it is all around us—in the buildings where people have gathered, celebrated, loved and created memories for generations.
And now, this beautiful little church will always hold a special place in our memories too, because it became part of Alex and Giorgia's story.

Quel giorno ho avuto la bellissima opportunità di partecipare al matrimonio di Alex e Giorgia presso la Chiesa dei Santi Giuseppe e Biagio a Carciano, una frazione di Stresa. Avevo già visto questa chiesa durante le mie passeggiate, quando abbiamo trascorso un paio di mesi a Stresa. È una chiesa incantevole, resa ancora più speciale dal fatto che eravamo lì per celebrare due persone che iniziavano la loro vita insieme. Ma per quanto fosse bello il matrimonio, non ho potuto fare a meno di chiedermi quale fosse la storia della chiesa che ci circondava.
La storia di questa chiesa risale a quasi mille anni fa. L'originale Chiesa di San Biagio sarebbe stata costruita intorno all'anno 1000, ma si trovava molto più vicino alle rive del Lago Maggiore. Nel corso dei secoli fu abbandonata e alla fine cadde in rovina. Esattamente cosa le sia accaduto rimane incerto, con le storie locali che suggeriscono di tutto, da un terremoto all'avanzamento del lago nella zona, o persino alla peste.
Verso la fine del XVIII secolo, fu costruita una nuova chiesa più in alto, dove si trova quella attuale. Oggi è dedicata sia a San Giuseppe che a San Biagio e serve la comunità di Carciano. La chiesa che vediamo oggi fu ampliata e ristrutturata nel 1933, quando fu aggiunta la sua caratteristica facciata neogotica. La sua posizione elevata offre inoltre splendide viste sul Golfo Borromeo e sul Lago Maggiore.
Nel 2025 sono stati autorizzati lavori di restauro delle superfici interne decorate della chiesa, dimostrando che le sue caratteristiche artistiche e storiche continuano a ricevere attenzione e a essere preservate. Il censimento delle chiese italiane elenca un Oratorio di San Biagio separato in Via Volta 10, come luogo di culto sussidiario appartenente alla Parrocchia dei Santi Giuseppe e Biagio.
C'era qualcosa di particolarmente significativo nell'essere all'interno di una chiesa con così tanti secoli di storia mentre assistevamo ad Alex e Giorgia che iniziavano un nuovo capitolo della loro vita. Luoghi come questo mi ricordano che la storia non si trova sempre nei musei o scritta nei libri. A volte è tutto intorno a noi, negli edifici dove le persone si sono riunite, hanno festeggiato, amato e creato ricordi per generazioni.
E ora, questa bellissima chiesetta avrà sempre un posto speciale anche nei nostri ricordi, perché è diventata parte della storia di Alex e Giorgia.
