On a quick trip to visit family in Belgium, Angela, Brody, Blake and I had the pleasure of spending the day with our cousins Dennis, Belinda, Mathias, Ollie and Hugo at Walibi Amusement Park.  Firstly, it was truly special to have this adventure with all of them, but I can’t believe how well run and exciting the park was for everyone.

Walibi is located in Wavre, Belgium, but its story began back in 1972. Belgian businessman Eddy Meeùs had obtained the exclusive rights to sell water-ski tow systems throughout the Benelux and purchased a property near Limal featuring a three-hectare lake. His original plan was to create a recreational centre focused on water skiing.

That vision soon changed after Meeùs met with an amusement-ride manufacturer, inspiring him to transform the property into an amusement park instead. The park’s name, Walibi, was created from the first two letters of the three towns connected to the site: WAvre, LImal and BIerges.

The park opened on July 26, 1975, initially featuring attractions such as ponies, pedal boats, bumper cars, fairground rides and the water-ski cable system. It was one of the first European parks to introduce a single day ticket providing unlimited access to the attractions.

One of the most interesting chapters in Walibi’s history began in the late 1990s, when founder Eddy Meeùs decided to sell the Walibi group. In 1998, the company was purchased by American entertainment company Premier Parks, which was rapidly expanding its amusement-park empire. When Premier Parks adopted the Six Flags name in 2000, the Walibi parks became part of the Six Flags family.

In 2001, the transformation became official when Walibi Belgium was renamed Six Flags Belgium. The familiar Walibi kangaroo disappeared from the park’s branding, replaced by the Six Flags identity and characters from the Looney Tunes universe, including Bugs Bunny. The park also received significant investment, with Six Flags announcing a major programme of new attractions designed to modernize the park and attract even more visitors. The first Halloween event was also introduced during this period, adding a new seasonal tradition that would eventually become an important part of the park’s calendar.

The Six Flags years also left their mark on Walibi’s roller-coaster history. Cobra, which opened in 2001, was introduced during this era and remains part of the park’s coaster lineup today. For several years, visitors were essentially experiencing a little piece of the American Six Flags brand right in the heart of Belgium.

However, the Six Flags chapter was relatively short-lived. In 2005, Six Flags sold the Belgian park, bringing an end to its American identity. The park returned to its original name, Walibi Belgium, and, perhaps most importantly for longtime fans, the beloved kangaroo mascot came back. In 2006, the park was acquired by French company Compagnie des Alpes, which remains its owner today.

The Six Flags era was a fascinating but temporary transformation in Walibi’s long history. The park went from its distinctly Belgian roots to an American-inspired identity and then, ultimately, found its way back to Walibi. Today, traces of those years remain—not only in the history of the park itself, but also in attractions such as Cobra, which continues to remind visitors of the time when Walibi Belgium was known as Six Flags Belgium.

Today Walibi has been transformed into five themed “Worlds,” each with its own atmosphere, scenery, attractions, food and personality, while also having the Walibi Boulevard entrance area and the separate Loup-Garou zone.

Exotic World is a colourful tropical paradise inspired by the Polynesian islands. The area is filled with lush, colourful surroundings and attractions designed for a mixture of families and thrill-seekers. One of its biggest attractions is Tiki-Waka, the family roller coaster that twists and turns through the tropical landscape. The area currently has six attractions, three restaurants and a shop, making it much more than simply a collection of rides.

Adventure World is where things get a lot more adventurous. The area has a Wild West atmosphere, with attractions designed around exploration, challenges and thrills.

This is one of the largest themed areas in the park, with 10 attractions, nine restaurants and two shops.

Karma World takes visitors on a colourful journey to India, with the area inspired particularly by the vibrant world of Bollywood cinema. The colours, music and atmosphere are designed to make this one of the most visually striking areas of the park. There are five attractions, three restaurants and one shop here. This is also where you'll find Kondaa, Walibi's enormous 50-metre megacoaster. While the surroundings may be colourful and exotic, the ride itself is anything but relaxing!

Fun World is aimed particularly at younger visitors and families who are ready for their first taste of thrills. The park describes it as the ideal place for young adventurers looking for their first sensations, with colourful decorations and seven attractions plus a restaurant.

One of the attractions here is Fun Pilot, a family roller coaster that offers a gentler introduction to the world of coasters.

Dock World is the newest of Walibi's major themed areas, and it gives the park a completely different feel. Instead of tropical islands, India or the Wild West, visitors enter a fishing village, where the theme revolves around the sea, boats and maritime adventure. Walibi describes it as a place where adventure heads out onto the high seas. Dock World currently has six attractions, three restaurants and one shop.

And there's a very good reason this new area has become particularly important: it is home to Mecalodon, Walibi's newest roller coaster, which opened in 2025. The coaster carries the fishing and sea theme through the ride, making the attraction feel like part of the world rather than simply a roller coaster dropped into the park.

Then there is the Loup-Garou zone, which is slightly different from the other Worlds. Instead of a strong geographic theme, this area embraces nature and a lush woodland atmosphere surrounding the famous wooden Loup-Garou coaster.  The zone currently contains seven attractions, five restaurants and a shop. But this area is about to undergo a major transformation.

2026 is the final season of the original Loup-Garou. The wooden coaster is scheduled to take its final ride on January 3, 2027, before being transformed into a completely new Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) steel coaster. The new attraction is planned to open in 2028 as part of a future Festival World, inspired by the atmosphere of New Orleans.

Walibi Boulevard, the entrance and exit to the park, is the park's main street, with shops, restaurants and entertainment. It doesn't have the same immersive theme as the other Worlds, but it acts as the gateway into Walibi and the place where your day begins and ends.

Parco divertimenti Walibi

Roller Coasters / Montagne Russe

What I found very interest is how the park creates different environments that you actually travel through. You can go from Polynesia → Wild West → India → a children's world → a Belgian fishing village → a mysterious woodland, all within the same park.  And of course, you can’t help but mention the TEN roller coasters.  Each having its own flair.

Let’s look at each of them based on when they were built:

Montagne Russe

Roller Coasters / Montagne Russe 1 & 2

Turbine – opened in 1982, is a Steel launched coaster and is Walibi's true old-timers. When it opened it was an outdoor coaster and you could see the enormous loop.  However, the ride was very loud and in 1999 the whole coaster was enclosed in a large building to reduce the noise.  By 2013, the outer vertical spikes were also enclosed which make the ride completely indoor and in darkness.

Everyone that rode is said this coaster is pretty wild. The train is launched from 0 to 85 km/h in about three seconds, shoots through a vertical loop, then climbs a 42-metre-high spike before rolling back down and completing the course backwards. The entire experience takes place inside the darkened building. Walibi lists the ride at 220 metres long and 42 metres high, with one loop.

Calamity Mine takes riders into a Wild West-style mining adventure. Rather than focusing purely on speed, it combines tight turns, dips, tunnels and themed scenery.  It has been operating since 1992, making it another long-standing Walibi favourite.  It reaches a top speed of 48 km/h

Roller Coaster / Montagna Russa 3

Loup-Garou or “werewolf” in English, is one of Walibi’s most recognizable attractions, with its huge wooden structure weaving through the trees and its track seemingly twisting and turning in every direction. Built in 1999, the coaster stands approximately 28 metres high, has a track length of 1,035 metres and reaches a maximum speed of 80 km/h. Riders must be at least 120 cm tall to ride it.

Unlike modern steel coasters such as Kondaa, Loup-Garou is made almost entirely from wood, giving riders a completely different experience. Wooden coasters are known for their distinctive rumbling, vibrations and somewhat unpredictable feeling as the train races through the structure. Rather than the smooth, almost effortless sensation of a modern steel coaster, Loup-Garou has that classic rough-and-wild wooden-coaster character.

You can see the enormous wooden framework before you even get on, which makes the ride look almost intimidating. Once aboard, the train climbs into the structure before plunging through a series of drops, sharp turns and hills. The combination of speed, noise, movement and the massive wooden framework make sit feel much more old-school than some of Walibi's newer rides.

Roller Coaster / Montagna Russa 4

Vampier opened in 1999, making it one of the park's older surviving coasters.  It inverted steel roller coaster, meaning the track is above you and the train hangs underneath it. Instead of sitting on top of the track, your legs dangle freely in the air, giving you the sensation that you're flying through the course.  Built by Dutch manufacturer Vekoma, Vampier is a 689-metre-long coaster that rises approximately 33 metres and reaches a maximum speed of 80 km/h. It features five inversions, meaning riders are turned upside down five times during the journey.

What makes Vampier particularly fun is the sensation of having nothing beneath your feet. As the train races through the course, riders experience loops, twists and rapid changes in direction with their legs hanging in the open air.

Roller Coaster / Montagna Russa 5

Cobra opened in 2001, during the period when the park was known as Six Flags Belgium, making it a little piece of that fascinating chapter in Walibi's history. The coaster is a Vekoma Boomerang, a design that gives riders the unusual experience of travelling through the same course twice—once forwards and then again backwards.

The ride begins rather deceptively. The train slowly climbs, building the anticipation before suddenly accelerating through the course. Riders reach a maximum speed of 76 km/h and are taken through three inversions, including a vertical loop and two additional elements that turn riders upside down. The track is 285 metres long and reaches a height of 36 metres.

But the real trick comes at the end of the forward journey. Instead of returning to the station, the train is pulled backward up a second incline. It then races through the entire course in reverse. Therefore, you experience the twists and inversions without knowing exactly what is coming next—a completely different sensation from riding the coaster forwards.

I think that’s what makes Cobra particularly memorable. It’s not necessarily the fastest coaster at Walibi, but it plays with your sense of anticipation. You know what happened going forward, but when you’re suddenly travelling backwards at speed, your perspective is completely different.

Pulsar opened in 2016 and was something completely new. Mack Rides had created an entirely new attraction concept called PowerSplash, combining the acceleration and excitement of a launched coaster with the splashdown of a water ride.  Instead of a traditional train, riders sit in a large boat-like vehicle that is launched forwards and backwards three times along a short but incredibly intense track. The ride reaches a height of 45 metres and a top speed of 101 km/h, with riders experiencing the sensation of repeatedly flying up and down the enormous vertical spikes.

The real surprise comes at the end. On the final run, the vehicle plunges down from the 45-metre height and crashes into the water, creating the enormous splash that gives Pulsar its unique character. The ride lasts approximately 70–78 seconds, but it packs an incredible amount of action into that short time.

It was such an innovative concept that Pulsar actually won the IAAPA award for Best New Concept before it had even officially opened. The Los Angeles Times also included it among the world's most anticipated new attractions for 2016.

One of the fascinating things about Pulsar is where it was built—right on an existing lake at Walibi. Construction began in April 2015 and took approximately a year. Part of the lake had to be temporarily drained, and a dam constructed so foundations could be installed. Engineers were dealing with a challenging, marshy environment while constructing a ride that would rise 45 metres above the water. The total investment was approximately €8.5 million.

Tiki-Waka opened in 2018 as part of Walibi ambitious €100 million investment programme, which was designed to transform around 75% of the park and introduce a series of new themed areas known as the Worlds of Walibi. Tiki-Waka became the centrepiece of the new Exotic World, giving this part of the park a colourful tropical and Polynesian-inspired atmosphere.

Unlike Kondaa, Vampier or Cobra, Tiki-Waka is designed as a family roller coaster. It is a “funcoaster,” meaning that while it offers plenty of twists, turns and thrills, it is intended to be accessible to a much wider range of visitors. The coaster reaches a maximum speed of 55 km/h, climbs 21 metres and has 564 metres of track.

What makes Tiki-Waka particularly enjoyable is the layout. Rather than simply racing in a straight line, the track winds and twists through the Exotic World scenery, giving riders a sense of movement and surprise without the extreme intensity of Walibi’s larger thrill coasters.  The ride has a minimum height of 1 metre, although children between 1 metre and 1.2 metres must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone under 1 metre cannot ride.

Fun Pilot opened in 2019 as part of Walibi Belgium’s major transformation programme. It became the signature attraction of Fun World, a colourful area designed especially with younger visitors and families in mind. The official opening of Fun World and Fun Pilot took place on May 25, 2019.

The coaster was built by the German company Zierer and is what is known as a kiddie or children's coaster. The whole ride is designed around the idea of becoming a pilot, with the train resembling a small airplane and the surrounding area carrying the aviation theme. Walibi's invitation is simple: "Become a real pilot" and take off on your first roller-coaster adventure.

Fun Pilot is considerably smaller and gentler than Walibi's major thrill rides. The track is 190 metres long, reaches a maximum height of 9.5 metres and has a top speed of 40 km/h. The train holds 16 passengers.

Roller Coaster / Montagna Russa 9

Kondaa opened on May 8, 2021, as the centrepiece of a major expansion of Walibi’s Exotic World. Built by renowned Swiss manufacturer Intamin, it was the largest investment in the park’s history at the time, costing approximately €25 million. The coaster and its surrounding 4.5-hectare area were created to give visitors a much more immersive experience, with Kondaa representing a gigantic mythical creature hidden within a forgotten, overgrown world.

The numbers alone are impressive. Kondaa rises 50 metres above the ground, stretches for 1,200 metres and reaches a top speed of 113 km/h. When it opened, it became the highest and fastest roller coaster in the Benelux. It also features an incredible 15 airtime moments, meaning there are 15 points during the ride where riders experience the sensation of weightlessness. Walibi describes it as its "coaster of all records."

But Kondaa isn't simply about going high and fast. The ride has a remarkably varied layout. After climbing the 45-degree lift hill to 50 metres, the train plunges into its first drop at an angle of 80 degrees. Riders then race through a series of hills, twists and turns, including an outward-banked airtime hill, a non-inverting cobra roll, a high-speed ground-hugging section and a wall stall. The ride also features a side-banked double-down, giving riders a combination of airtime and strong lateral forces.

One of the most fascinating things about Kondaa is that it has no traditional inversions. You never actually go completely upside down, yet the ride still manages to feel incredibly intense. Instead, Intamin designed the coaster around speed, airtime, changes in direction and lateral forces. The result is a ride that constantly throws something different at you.

The story behind the coaster is just as interesting. According to the legend created for Exotic World, Kondaa is a gigantic creature that once terrified the native tribes. Thousands of years ago, one brave warrior managed to tame the monster and steal one of its eggs. The creature was eventually forgotten, until its egg hatched and Kondaa returned. The enormous coaster is therefore designed to feel as though visitors are entering the creature's forgotten territory.

The ride's surroundings help tell that story, with ancient-looking structures, vegetation and clues suggesting that something enormous once lived there. Walibi deliberately didn't explain every detail of the story, leaving visitors to discover the clues and create their own interpretation of what happened.

Roller Coaster / Montagna Russa 10

Mecalodon opened in 2025 as the centrepiece of Dock World, a new themed area designed as a colourful fishing village. Instead of simply looking like a roller coaster sitting in a park, Mecalodon winds through the new harbour setting and races just above the water, making the ride feel like part of the fishing-village adventure.

The name Mecalodon is a play on "megalodon," the enormous prehistoric shark, and the mechanical nature of the coaster. The shark theme continues throughout the attraction, creating the feeling that something enormous is lurking beneath the water.

And although Mecalodon is classified as a family coaster, don't assume that means it's boring! The 925-metre-long ride reaches speeds of 65 km/h and includes three accelerations. Even more impressive, riders experience 14 airtime moments, creating that wonderful feeling of briefly lifting out of your seat. Walibi describes it as the longest family coaster in the Benelux.

At 15 metres high, Mecalodon isn't anywhere near as tall as Kondaa's 50 metres, but height isn't the point. Its relatively low profile allows the coaster to weave through Dock World and skim close to the water, making the surrounding scenery an important part of the experience. The three accelerations add bursts of speed throughout the ride rather than relying on one enormous first drop.

Mecalodon also has a wonderful connection to Walibi's history. The coaster was part of the park's celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2025, marking another major step in the transformation that began with Walibi's investment programme in 2018. It also became the park's third-longest coaster, behind Loup-Garou and Kondaa.

Flash Back - Water Ride / Attrazione Acquatica

When I first saw Flash Back, I honestly thought it was a roller coaster—but it turns out it’s actually a water ride, and one with a pretty unexpected twist!

Flash Back is one of Walibi Belgium's classic water rides, and it has been entertaining visitors since 1995. It was introduced as part of Walibi's 20th-anniversary celebrations and was one of the park's major investments that year at almost €3.4 million.

What makes Flash Back stand out is its unusual backwards drop. Early in the ride, a rotating platform turns the boat around, sending riders down the first major descent backwards. The ride then continues through a series of lifts, turns and drops before turning the boats around again.

At approximately 511 metres long and 23 metres high, the ride takes about four and a half minutes and has a capacity of 900 riders per hour. The finale is one of the most recognizable parts of Flash Back. The final descent features a small hump between two drops, creating a spectacular double splash as the boat hits the water. It is the perfect way to finish a ride that has been combining thrills and water for more than three decades.

More than 30 years after opening, Flash Back remains a piece of Walibi Belgium history. With its quirky theme, backwards descent and spectacular splashes, it continues to be one of those classic attractions that brings together thrills, nostalgia and a whole lot of water.

Flash Back Attrazione Acquatica

Because of my back I didn’t ride any of the roller coasters, but I got to hear the family explain how amazing they were.  Luckily, we got there when the park opened and they got to ride on several rides without waiting more than five minutes.  This allowed them to ride them more than once, which for them was pretty special.  I, however, was happy to take the videos and photos.

There are many food options in the park, and we had a couple of buckets of chicken and fries, which went very well with the amusement park theme.  All in all, it was wonderful fun filled 8 hours spending time with family and enjoying the great outdoors.

And that is what life is all about!
