I spent the day exploring sights in our “back yard” with my grandsons Brody, Blake, Weston and Jameson. Our second stop was the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish British Columbia that included a suspension bridge and The Spirit Trail.
The Sea to Sky Gondola was created with the vision of making one of British Columbia's most spectacular natural landscapes accessible to everyone. Nestled along the scenic Sea-to-Sky Highway between Vancouver and Whistler, it offers breathtaking views of Howe Sound, the Stawamus Chief, and the towering Coast Mountains. What is now one of the region's most beloved attractions began to take shape in April 2013, when construction started on the $22 million project. Just over a year later, on May 16, 2014, the Sea to Sky Gondola officially opened, offering visitors an unforgettable experience that seamlessly blends the beauty of nature with world-class engineering.
The journey to the summit is an experience in itself. In just ten minutes, the eight-passenger cabins ascend approximately 885 metres (2,900 feet) above sea level, travelling nearly two kilometres through ancient forests and spectacular mountain scenery. The gondola system was designed by the Austrian company Doppelmayr/Garaventa, a world leader in ropeway engineering, while the cabins were manufactured in Switzerland. At the summit sits the magnificent Summit Lodge, constructed with more than 700 Douglas fir beams that harmoniously complement the surrounding landscape.
Over the years, the Sea to Sky Gondola has become much more than a scenic ride. Hiking trails, viewing platforms, and the spectacular Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge allow visitors to immerse themselves in the extraordinary beauty of the area. Interpretive displays also share the natural history of the region and honour the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous Peoples who have called these lands home for thousands of years, inviting visitors not only to admire the landscape but also to understand and respect the place they are exploring.
Its history has also been marked by extraordinary challenges. In August 2019, a deliberate act of sabotage resulted in the cutting of the steel support cable, causing numerous cabins to crash to the ground. After months of intensive work and millions of dollars invested in rebuilding the system, the gondola reopened to the public in early 2020. Tragically, in September of that same year, a second act of vandalism once again damaged the attraction. Refusing to give up, the owners rebuilt the Sea to Sky Gondola once more, implementing advanced security measures before reopening in May 2021.
Today, the Sea to Sky Gondola represents far more than a tourist destination—it is a symbol of resilience, renewal, and wonder. Each year, it welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world, inviting them to lift their eyes to the mountains, breathe in the fresh air of Canada's west coast, and be captivated by one of the country's most extraordinary landscapes.
Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge
The Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge is one of the most memorable experiences awaiting visitors at the summit of the Sea to Sky Gondola. Stretching approximately 100 metres (328 feet) across a dramatic alpine landscape, the bridge offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Howe Sound, the surrounding forests, and the towering Coast Mountains. With thousands of feet of mountainside falling away beyond its edges, crossing the bridge is both exhilarating and awe-inspiring—a reminder of just how extraordinary British Columbia's natural beauty truly is.
Completed in October 2013, several months before the Sea to Sky Gondola officially opened, the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge was designed to be far more than a scenic crossing. It was envisioned as a place where visitors could slow down, take in their surroundings, and experience the profound connection between the mountains, the forest, and the sky. The bridge was built by Macdonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd., a British Columbia company renowned for its craftsmanship and its restoration work on the historic Kinsol Trestle on Vancouver Island. Their expertise helped create a structure that is both architecturally impressive and beautifully integrated into the mountain landscape.
Unlike many suspension bridges that simply connect two points, the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge serves as a gateway to discovery. Crossing the bridge leads visitors to the Spirit Viewing Platform, where interpretive displays share the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for these lands for thousands of years. The platform also offers spectacular views stretching across Howe Sound and the surrounding peaks, creating a peaceful space for reflection and appreciation of the natural world.

La nostra seconda tappa è stata la Sea to Sky Gondola a Squamish, nella Columbia Britannica, un’esperienza che includeva uno spettacolare ponte sospeso e lo Spirit Trail.
La Sea to Sky Gondola nasce dal desiderio di permettere a chiunque di ammirare uno degli scenari naturali più spettacolari della Columbia Britannica. Situata lungo la suggestiva Sea-to-Sky Highway, tra Vancouver e Whistler, offre una vista mozzafiato su Howe Sound, lo Stawamus Chief e le imponenti montagne costiere che si innalzano verso il cielo. Quello che oggi è uno dei luoghi più visitati della regione ha preso forma nell'aprile del 2013, quando ebbero inizio i lavori di costruzione di un progetto dal valore di 22 milioni di dollari. Poco più di un anno dopo, il 16 maggio 2014, la Sea to Sky Gondola aprì ufficialmente le sue porte, regalando ai visitatori un'esperienza capace di unire la bellezza della natura al meglio dell'ingegneria moderna.
Il viaggio verso la vetta è già di per sé un'esperienza indimenticabile. In appena dieci minuti, le cabine da otto posti salgono di circa 885 metri sul livello del mare, percorrendo quasi due chilometri tra foreste secolari e panorami spettacolari. Il sistema funiviario è stato progettato dall'azienda austriaca Doppelmayr/Garaventa, leader mondiale nel settore, mentre le cabine sono state realizzate in Svizzera. In cima alla montagna si trova il Summit Lodge, una magnifica struttura costruita con oltre 700 travi di abete Douglas che si integra armoniosamente con il paesaggio circostante.
Nel corso degli anni, la Sea to Sky Gondola è diventata molto più di una semplice attrazione panoramica. Sentieri escursionistici, piattaforme panoramiche e lo spettacolare Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge permettono ai visitatori di immergersi nella straordinaria bellezza del territorio. Pannelli interpretativi raccontano inoltre la storia naturale e il patrimonio culturale delle popolazioni indigene che da migliaia di anni vivono in queste terre, offrendo un'esperienza che invita non solo a guardare, ma anche a comprendere e rispettare il luogo che si sta visitando.
La sua storia è stata segnata anche da momenti difficili. Nell'agosto del 2019, un deliberato atto di sabotaggio provocò il taglio del cavo d'acciaio portante, causando la caduta di numerose cabine. Dopo mesi di intenso lavoro e milioni di dollari investiti nella ricostruzione, la gondola riaprì al pubblico all'inizio del 2020. Purtroppo, nel settembre dello stesso anno, un secondo atto vandalico colpì nuovamente l'impianto. Lontani dall'arrendersi, i proprietari decisero di ricostruire ancora una volta la Sea to Sky Gondola, dotandola di avanzati sistemi di sicurezza e riaprendola nel maggio del 2021.
Oggi, la Sea to Sky Gondola rappresenta molto più di una meta turistica: è un simbolo di resilienza, rinascita e meraviglia. Ogni anno accoglie centinaia di migliaia di visitatori provenienti da tutto il mondo, invitandoli ad alzare lo sguardo verso le montagne, respirare l'aria pura della costa occidentale canadese e lasciarsi incantare da uno dei panorami più straordinari del Canada.
