Italian Republic Day (Festa della Repubblica) is celebrated every year on June 2 and marks the birth of modern Italy as a republic. The holiday commemorates the historic referendum held on June 2–3, 1946, when Italians, simply were asked to choose between maintaining the monarchy or establishing a republic after the devastation of World War II and the collapse of fascism.
