Today Indira and I strolled through Fraser River Heritage Park and had lunch at the Sunflower Lodge located in the park.  There are places that invite us to pause, not because they are loud or grand, but because they quietly whisper their stories. Fraser River Heritage Park is one of those places.  Perched high above the Fraser River Valley in Mission, British Columbia, this park offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region.  The kind of views that encourages us to linger a little longer and simply breathe it all in.

But Fraser River Heritage Park is much more than a scenic lookout. It is a place where nature, history, beauty and remembrance come together. Every pathway has a story to tell—some joyful, some difficult, but all worthy of being remembered.

Long before Mission took shape as the community it is today, the Stó:lō people, or the "People of the River," lived in harmony with these lands and waterways, a connection that spans countless generations. Their deep connection to the Fraser River continues to shape the cultural identity of this region.

Later, the site became home to St. Mary's Mission and eventually the St. Mary's Indian Residential School, which operated from 1867 to 1961. Today, Fraser River Heritage Park acknowledges this history and stands as an important place of reflection and reconciliation.

As we walked through the park, I was struck by the peacefulness that surrounds it. There were student choirs from different schools singing and the harmonies could be heard throughout the park.  Others were seated on the ground enjoying a picnic and children were laughing and playing on the playground.

One of the park's most treasured landmarks is the reconstructed Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Originally built in 1892 then rebuilt in 1996 after a devastating fire.  The Grotto has welcomed Catholic pilgrims and visitors for well over a century. Whether one visits for spiritual reasons or simply to admire its beauty, it remains a powerful symbol of faith, resilience, and community.

The park also preserves remnants of its past through the foundations of former buildings, heritage gardens, and one of the original orchards planted on the property. Rose and rhododendron gardens bloom throughout the seasons, adding colour and life to a place that honours both its history and its future.

Today, Fraser River Heritage Park has become the heart of the community. It hosts concerts, Canada Day celebrations, weddings, graduation photographs, and countless family gatherings. It is where generations come together to create new memories while honouring those who came before us.

What I love most about Fraser River Heritage Park is that it reminds us that history is rarely simple. Places can hold beauty and sorrow, celebration and remembrance, all at once. This park doesn't ask us to choose one story over another; it invites us to listen to them all with open hearts.

As we sat overlooking the Fraser Valley, watching the sunlight dance across the river below, I was reminded that some of life's most meaningful moments aren't found in grand adventures at all. Sometimes, they are found on a quiet park bench, beneath an ancient tree, looking out at a view that has inspired generations before us. Perhaps that is the true gift of Fraser River Heritage Park. It teaches us that remembering matters, that beauty can be found alongside reflection, and that every landscape carries the stories of those who have walked there before us. And sometimes, all we need to do is slow down long enough to hear them.

Fraser River Heritage Park

Oggi Indira ed io abbiamo passeggiato attraverso il Fraser River Heritage Park e abbiamo pranzato al Sunflower Lodge, situato all’interno del parco. Ci sono luoghi che ci invitano a fermarci, non perché siano rumorosi o grandiosi, ma perché sussurrano silenziosamente le loro storie. Il Fraser River Heritage Park è proprio uno di questi luoghi.

Situato in posizione elevata sopra la Fraser River Valley, a Mission, nella Columbia Britannica, questo parco offre alcune delle viste panoramiche più spettacolari della regione. Sono quei panorami che ci invitano a rimanere ancora un po’ e semplicemente a respirare profondamente, lasciandoci avvolgere dalla loro bellezza.

Ma il Fraser River Heritage Park è molto più di un semplice punto panoramico. È un luogo dove natura, storia, bellezza e memoria si incontrano. Ogni sentiero ha una storia da raccontare—alcune gioiose, altre difficili, ma tutte meritevoli di essere ricordate.

Molto prima che Mission diventasse la comunità che conosciamo oggi, il popolo Stóō, conosciuto come il “Popolo del Fiume”, viveva in armonia con queste terre e queste acque, in un legame che attraversa innumerevoli generazioni. La loro profonda connessione con il Fraser River continua ancora oggi a plasmare l’identità culturale di questa regione.

In seguito, questo luogo divenne sede della St. Mary’s Mission e, successivamente, della St. Mary’s Indian Residential School, che operò dal 1867 al 1961. Oggi il Fraser River Heritage Park riconosce questa storia e rappresenta un importante luogo di riflessione e riconciliazione.

Mentre camminavamo attraverso il parco, sono stata colpita dalla pace che lo circonda. C’erano cori di studenti provenienti da diverse scuole che cantavano, e le loro armonie si diffondevano in tutto il parco. Altre persone erano sedute sull’erba, godendosi un picnic, mentre i bambini ridevano e giocavano nel parco giochi.

Uno dei luoghi più preziosi del parco è la ricostruita Grotta di Nostra Signora di Lourdes. Originariamente costruita nel 1892 e poi ricostruita nel 1996 dopo un incendio devastante, la Grotta ha accolto pellegrini cattolici e visitatori per oltre un secolo. Che si venga per motivi spirituali o semplicemente per ammirarne la bellezza, rimane un potente simbolo di fede, resilienza e comunità.

Il parco conserva anche tracce del suo passato attraverso le fondamenta degli edifici un tempo presenti, i giardini storici e uno dei frutteti originali piantati nella proprietà. I giardini di rose e rododendri fioriscono durante le diverse stagioni, aggiungendo colore e vita a un luogo che onora sia la propria storia sia il proprio futuro.

Oggi il Fraser River Heritage Park è diventato il cuore della comunità. Ospita concerti, celebrazioni del Canada Day, matrimoni, fotografie di laurea e innumerevoli incontri familiari. È un luogo dove generazioni diverse si riuniscono per creare nuovi ricordi, rendendo omaggio a coloro che sono venuti prima di noi.

Ciò che amo di più del Fraser River Heritage Park è che ci ricorda che la storia raramente è semplice. I luoghi possono custodire bellezza e dolore, celebrazione e memoria, tutto allo stesso tempo. Questo parco non ci chiede di scegliere una storia rispetto a un’altra; ci invita ad ascoltarle tutte con il cuore aperto.

Mentre eravamo sedute ad ammirare la Fraser Valley, osservando la luce del sole danzare sul fiume sottostante, mi sono ricordata che alcuni dei momenti più significativi della vita non si trovano necessariamente nelle grandi avventure. A volte si trovano su una tranquilla panchina di un parco, sotto un albero secolare, davanti a un panorama che ha ispirato generazioni prima di noi.

Forse questo è il vero dono del Fraser River Heritage Park. Ci insegna che ricordare è importante, che la bellezza può convivere con la riflessione e che ogni paesaggio porta con sé le storie di coloro che lo hanno attraversato prima di noi. E a volte tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno è rallentare abbastanza a lungo per riuscire ad ascoltarle.
