After our visit to Asigliano Franco took us to Sacred Mount of Crea.  A Marian sanctuary located on one of the highest hills of Monferrato in the province of Alessandria.  It is part of the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy and in 2003 was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It is also located in the Natural Park of the Sacred Mount of Crea which was established in 1980. 

It is believed that Saint Eusebius, bishop of Vercelli, climbed the hill around 350 and brought a wooden statue of the Madonna with Child. The he would have built the first oratory but in reality. the statue is from the 13th century and there is not much known about its origins.  However, Eusebius spread Christianity and Marian devotion to the people of Monferrato and the Piedmont valleys, when at the time were still pagan.  Eusebius was committed in replacing the cult of Celtic female deities with the cult of Mother of God, Mary in both Oropa and Crea.

In 1156 the Marquises of Monferrato donated a relic of the Holy Cross and at the beginning of the 14th century, Paleologi, the new marquises of Monferrato took Crea under their protection.  The chapel of Santa Margherita di Antiochia inside the church was built by them between 1372 and 1418.  It wasn’t until 1580 that the Gonzagas family expanded the church and the chapels of the Sacred Mount was conceived. 

It was modeled after the Sacred Mount of Varallo which was in advanced stages of construction and inspired prior of Crea Father Constatino Massino in 1589 to make plans for a devotional path of 18 stations dedicated to the life of the Virgin and the “mysteries” of the Rosary.  By 1598, 10 chapels surrounded the sanctuary and by the 17th century the Mount had 18 chapels and 17 hermitages which you could descend from the top where Chapel of Paradise was located to the sanctuary. 

In 1735 the façade was renovated to the Baroque style of today however by 1801 during the suppression of religious orders by Napoleon, his troops destroyed the Sacred Mount and it was abandoned.  The “Society for the Restoration of the Sanctuary of Crea” was established in 1850 and they began the reconstruction.  New chapels and restoration of the Chapel of Paradise were carried out throughout the years to bring it to the amazing Mount we see today.

There are so many works of art within the sanctuary and chapels, including the frescoes in the chapel of Santa Margherita that date back to 1474 – 1479.  There are terracotta statues and frescoes that extend sacred scenes on the walls of the chapels.  In total the complex is now made of 23 chapels and 5 hermitages and based on Wikipedia the list is as follows:

I walked the path to the chapels but didn’t get to see all of them, however I did get to the top of the hill where the Chapel of Paradise stands and got to see it beauty.  The chapels were all closed. 

Here is a map that I was able to download from the Sacrimonti.org website.  Here they have a lot of photos and information of all the chapels.  If I had four or five hours, it would have been wonderful to walk the whole hill and take everything in.  But I was able to get photos of the Sanctuary and some of the chapels which I will share below as well as they video above.

Sacro Monte di Crea

Dopo la nostra visita ad Asigliano Franco ci ha portato al Sacro Monte di Crea.  Un santuario mariano situato su una delle colline più alte del Monferrato in provincia di Alessandria.  Fa parte dei Sacri Monti del Piemonte e della Lombardia e nel 2003 è stato proclamato Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO.  Si trova inoltre all'interno del Parco Naturale del Sacro Monte di Crea che è stato istituito nel 1980. 

Si ritiene che Sant'Eusebio, vescovo di Vercelli, salì sul colle intorno al 350 e portò una statua lignea della Madonna col Bambino. Il primo oratorio sarebbe stato costruito ma nella realtà. La statua risale al XIII secolo e non si sa molto delle sue origini.  Eusebio però diffuse il cristianesimo e la devozione mariana tra le genti del Monferrato e delle valli piemontesi, quando all'epoca erano ancora pagane.  Eusebio si impegnò a sostituire il culto delle divinità femminili celtiche con il culto della Madre di Dio, Maria, sia a Oropa che a Crea.

Nel 1156 i marchesi del Monferrato donarono una reliquia della Santa Croce e all'inizio del XIV secolo, i Paleologi, i nuovi marchesi del Monferrato presero Crea sotto la loro protezione.  La cappella di Santa Margherita di Antiochia all'interno della chiesa fu da loro costruita tra il 1372 e il 1418.  Fu solo nel 1580 che la famiglia Gonzaga ampliò la chiesa e furono concepite le cappelle del Sacro Monte. 

Fu modellata sul Sacro Monte di Varallo, che era in fase avanzata di costruzione, e ispirò il priore del Crea Padre Constatino Massino nel 1589 a progettare un percorso devozionale di 18 stazioni dedicato alla vita della Vergine e ai "misteri" del Rosario.  Nel 1598, 10 cappelle circondavano il santuario e nel XVII secolo il Monte aveva 18 cappelle e 17 eremi che si potevano scendere dalla cima dove si trovava la Cappella del Paradiso fino al santuario. 

Nel 1735 la facciata fu ristrutturata riportandola allo stile barocco di oggi, ma nel 1801 durante la soppressione degli ordini religiosi da parte di Napoleone, le sue truppe distrussero il Sacro Monte e fu abbandonato.  Nel 1850 fu costituita la "Società per il Restauro del Santuario di Crea" che ne iniziò la ricostruzione.      Nel corso degli anni sono state effettuate nuove cappelle e il restauro della Cappella del Paradiso per portarla sullo splendido Monte che vediamo oggi.

Tante sono le opere d'arte presenti all'interno del santuario e delle cappelle, tra cui gli affreschi della cappella di Santa Margherita che risalgono al 1474 – 1479.  Ci sono statue in terracotta e affreschi che estendono le scene sacre sulle pareti delle cappelle.  In totale il complesso è ora composto da 23 cappelle e 5 eremi e in base a Wikipedia l'elenco è il seguente:

Ho percorso il sentiero per le cappelle ma non sono riuscito a vederle tutte, tuttavia sono arrivato in cima alla collina dove si trova la Cappella del Paradiso e ho avuto modo di vederne la bellezza.  Le cappelle erano tutte chiuse. 

Ecco una mappa che sono riuscito a scaricare dal sito Sacrimonti.org .  Qui ci sono un sacco di foto e informazioni di tutte le cappelle.  Se avessi avuto quattro o cinque ore, sarebbe stato meraviglioso percorrere l'intera collina e godermi tutto.  Ma sono riuscito a scattare foto del Santuario e di alcune delle cappelle che condividerò qui sopra così come il video.
