Large plastic animals have taken over the streets, squares, fountain, and the lakefront in Arona and of course I needed to find out why because they are so cute and there must be a great story or opportunity for us to learn something.

Cracking Art is a movement with the intention to change history of art with strong social and environmental commitment.  Since 1993, the group investigates relationship between natural and artificial reality and the revolutionary use of plastic materials.  Located in Milan, Italy, each artist uses their own creativity to interpret contemporary problems and tensions. 

Catalytic cracking occurs chemically when converting raw crude oil into plastic.  For the group and artists is represents the moment “NATURAL” becomes artificial and the reason they seize that very moment in their art form.  The choice of regenerated and regenerable plastic for their art shows the acceptance of the inevitable and the world becoming increasingly artificial.  It is the groups hope the artwork will inspire community-wide conversation on the importance and the environmental impact of regeneration.

Regenerated plastic removes it from its toxic role in nature, and communicates, through art, the importance that we NEED to pay attention to our planet.  The Water’s Call in Arona from April 30th to October 30th, 2025 is intended to do exactly that.  What a sight to see when you walk around and see the colourful out of scale sculptures of penguins, snail, elephant, dolphins and frogs.  More to come are crocodile and cats. 

Arona Mayor Alberto Gusmeroli stated “We wanted to bring a powerful and immediate message to the hear of our city”.  “This peaceful invasion of artworks allows us to speak to citizens about sustainability, beauty, and respect for the environment through an artistic language accessible to all. It’s an initiative that combines culture, environmental education, and enhancement of our territory.”

The project was a collaboration by the municipal administration and the artists of the group.  Each of the animals was designed to interact with the specific location of Arona.  The choice, the colours, the positioning was to create wonder.  But also, to spark a reflection on climate change, to use resources reasonably and bring about the relationship between nature and artificiality.  Arona has the opportunity to become an open-air stage to education both children and adults. 

This exhibition connects city and water with these amazing animals and their traits:

• Penguin: is a social animal and its survival is affected by global warming and ice melting.  In Arona it is seeking coolness in the fountain

• Snail: has regenerative properties that symbolize rebirth and improvement.  In Arona it is standing proud on the promenade waiting for those to take pictures with it

• Cat: teaches us that nature can never be completely domesticated and constricted to endure human’s laws.  In Arona they are playing in the ruins

• Crocodile: is a reptile that lets us reflect on the ancestral creatures that inhabited the planet before humans – they are a powerful force of nature. In Arona it emerges menacingly as a warning on pollution

• Elephant: is a universal symbol of strength and memory and reminds us of the importance of the impact of history. In Arona the elephant is monitoring the water levels

• Dolphin: the first animal created by Cracking Art and has a strong ecological meaning as it is threatened by dangerous levels of plastics in the water. They invite us to seek harmony and respect in the centre of Arona

• Frog: they symbolize transformation and connection between water and land because it changes and adapts to its environment

With this exhibition, Arona is committed to promoting a culture that is accessible, environmentally conscious, and capable of generating a positive impact on our community.  Everyone is invited to be surprised, to reflect, and to engage with these unexpected symbols of art that is born from waste and transformed into beauty, inspiration, and change.

Grandi animali di plastica hanno occupato le strade, le piazze, la fontana e il lungolago di Arona e ovviamente avevo bisogno di scoprire perché, perché sono così carini e ci deve essere una grande storia o un'opportunità per noi di imparare qualcosa.

Cracking Art è un movimento con l'intento di cambiare la storia dell'arte con un forte impegno sociale e ambientale.  Dal 1993 il gruppo indaga il rapporto tra realtà naturale e artificiale e l'uso rivoluzionario delle materie plastiche.  Con sede a Milano, in Italia, ogni artista usa la propria creatività per interpretare i problemi e le tensioni contemporanee. 

Il cracking catalitico si verifica chimicamente durante la conversione del petrolio greggio grezzo in plastica.  Per il gruppo e per gli artisti rappresenta il momento in cui il "NATURALE" diventa artificiale e il motivo per cui colgono quel momento nella loro forma d'arte.  La scelta della plastica rigenerata e rigenerabile per la loro arte dimostra l'accettazione dell'inevitabile e del mondo che diventa sempre più artificiale.  I gruppi sperano che l'opera d'arte ispiri una conversazione a livello di comunità sull'importanza e l'impatto ambientale della rigenerazione.

La plastica rigenerata la spoglia dal suo ruolo tossico in natura, e comunica, attraverso l'arte, l'importanza che DOBBIAMO prestare attenzione al nostro pianeta.  Il richiamo dell’acqua

ad Arona dal 30 aprile al 30 ottobre 2025 vuole fare esattamente questo.  Che spettacolo da vedere quando si cammina e si vedono le sculture colorate fuori scala di pinguini, lumache, elefanti, delfini e rane.  Altri in arrivo sono coccodrilli e gatti. 

Il sindaco di Arona, Alberto Gusmeroli, ha dichiarato: " Abbiamo voluto portare un messaggio potente e immediato nel cuore della nostra città".  " L’invasione pacifica di queste opere ci permette di parlare ai cittadini di sostenibilità, di bellezza e di rispetto per l’ambiente, utilizzando un linguaggio artistico accessibile a tutti. È un’iniziativa che unisce cultura, educazione ambientale e valorizzazione del territorio".

Il progetto è stato realizzato in collaborazione tra l'amministrazione comunale e gli artisti del gruppo.  Ciascuno degli animali è stato progettato per interagire con la posizione specifica di Arona.  La scelta, i colori, il posizionamento sono stati quelli di creare meraviglia.  Ma anche per stimolare una riflessione sul cambiamento climatico, per utilizzare le risorse in modo ragionevole e realizzare il rapporto tra natura e artificialità.  Arona ha l'opportunità di diventare un palcoscenico a cielo aperto per l'educazione sia dei bambini che degli adulti. 

Questa mostra mette in contatto la città e l'acqua con questi incredibili animali e le loro caratteristiche:

• Pinguino: è un animale sociale e la sua sopravvivenza è influenzata dal riscaldamento globale e dallo scioglimento dei ghiacci.  Ad Arona si cerca il fresco nella fontana

• Lumaca: ha proprietà rigenerative che simboleggiano la rinascita e il miglioramento.  Ad Arona si erge fiero sul lungomare in attesa di chi lo fotografa

• Gatto: ci insegna che la natura non può mai essere completamente addomesticata e costretta a sopportare le leggi umane.  Ad Arona giocano tra le rovine

• Coccodrillo: è un rettile che ci permette di riflettere sulle creature ancestrali che abitavano il pianeta prima dell'uomo: sono una potente forza della natura. Ad Arona emerge minaccioso come un monito sull'inquinamento

• Elefante: è un simbolo universale di forza e memoria e ci ricorda l'importanza dell'impatto della storia. Ad Arona l'elefante sta monitorando i livelli dell'acqua

• Delfino: il primo animale creato da Cracking Art e ha un forte significato ecologico in quanto minacciato da pericolosi livelli di plastica nell'acqua. Ci invitano a cercare l'armonia e il rispetto in centro di Arona

• Rana: simboleggiano la trasformazione e la connessione tra l'acqua e la terra perché cambia e si adatta al suo ambiente

Con questa mostra, Arona si impegna a promuovere una cultura accessibile, attenta all'ambiente e capace di generare un impatto positivo sulla nostra comunità.  Tutti sono invitati a sorprendersi, a riflettere e a confrontarsi con questi simboli inaspettati di un'arte che nasce dai rifiuti e si trasforma in bellezza, ispirazione e cambiamento.
