What Matters Most - Ciò che Conta di Più

There are many things in life that seem important, the endless to-do lists, the chores waiting to be done, and the commitments that fill our calendars. But every once in a while, we're gifted with a gentle reminder of what matters most.
For me, one of these days was spent with two of my grandsons, Brody and Blake, filling our hours with laughter, friendly competition, and making memories that I know I will treasure for years to come.
Our adventure began cheering Blake on at his baseball game. There is something so special about watching our grandchildren do what they love. Seeing their determination, celebrating their successes, and encouraging them when things don't quite go as planned fills our heart in ways that are difficult to put into words. It's never really about the score or the final inning; it's about being there. Years from now, they may not remember every play they made, but I hope they'll remember that Nonna (grandma) was always cheering them on from the sidelines, when she could and when she wasn’t there, always with her heart.
After the game, we traded baseball diamonds for racetracks and headed to Castle Fun Park in Abbotsford. There were go-karts to race, mini golf courses to conquer, arcade games to master, and plenty of laughter along the way. Watching their faces light up with excitement reminded me that childhood is made up of these simple moments, the ones that become our most treasured memories.
What I didn’t know is that Castle Fun Park has been creating family memories for more than 35 years. It first opened in July 1989 as Wonderland Amusement Park, founded by Hank and Doreen Wiebe. In 1998, after a trademark dispute with another Canadian amusement park, it was renamed Castle Fun Park, a name suggested by the founders' seven-year-old granddaughter, who felt the word "fun" simply had to be included. Today, the park remains family-owned and operated by the second generation of the Wiebe family.
The story behind Castle Fun Park is every bit as inspiring as the memories created there. Hank Wiebe came to Canada as an 11-year-old refugee following World War II. Through hard work, perseverance, and a dream of creating a place where families could laugh and play together, he and his wife built one of Abbotsford's most beloved landmarks. Today, Castle Fun Park is home to more than 200 arcade games, go-karts, mini golf, bowling, laser attractions, and activities that continue to bring generations together.
But as wonderful as Castle Fun Park is, it wasn't really the destination that made today so special. It was Brody and Blake! It was hearing their laughter as we raced around the go-kart track, which Brody won hands down. Celebrating the great mini golf shots (and laughing at the not-so-great ones). Brody got two holes in one! And watching their excitement as they won tickets in the arcade was priceless.
We also found time to squeeze in a few games of crib, and Blake proudly double skunked both of us. Between the two of them, I lost at everything that day, but somehow, I felt like the biggest winner of all. Spending a day laughing, playing, and making memories with my grandsons is a victory that doesn't need keeping score. I relished listening to their stories, sharing hugs, and simply being present in the moment.
My AH HA moment came as I reflected on the day. Life has a funny way of changing what we keep score of. When we're young, we count our accomplishments. As we grow older, we begin to count our blessings.
Being Nonna has taught me that time is life's most precious gift. Children grow faster than we can imagine. One day they're holding our hand as they walk beside us, and before we know it, they're off chasing their own dreams and adventures. That's why I've learned to say "yes" whenever I can. The dishes can wait. The laundry will still be there tomorrow. There will always be one more thing to do, but there will never be another today.
One day, there will come a time when they won't ask me to play another game of crib or race them around a go-kart track. Childhood quietly slips through our fingers while we're busy living it. That's why I've learned to treasure these ordinary moments that become extraordinary memories.
Another AH HA moment was realizing that what matters most isn't winning, it's showing up. It's saying "yes" to one more game, one more hug, one more adventure, and one more memory made together.
So, although I may have lost every game we played, I felt like the biggest winner of all. Spending a day laughing, cheering, playing, and simply being Nonna is a victory that doesn't need keeping score.
Because at the end of our lives, we won't remember the errands we ran or the things we bought. We'll remember the baseball games, the laughter, the hugs, and the ordinary moments that quietly became extraordinary simply because we shared them with someone we love. That, to me, is what matters most.
Thank you for sharing this time with me Brody & Blake, Nonna loves you to the moon, stars and all our angels in between.
Until our next adventure...

I piatti possono aspettare.
