Italian Republic Day (Festa della Repubblica) is celebrated every year on June 2 and marks the birth of modern Italy as a republic. The holiday commemorates the historic referendum held on June 2–3, 1946, when Italians, simply were asked to choose between maintaining the monarchy or establishing a republic after the devastation of World War II and the collapse of fascism.

Today we celebrate our 42nd anniversary and the world and I say goodbye for the last time. You have been and will always be the love of my life, my soul mate, the father of my children, the grandfather to our grandchildren, the brother, the cousin, the uncle and the friend.

In my life, I’ve known a few people who have struggled with and passed away from mesothelioma. At the time, I wasn’t very informed about the disease, but after Gianni was diagnosed with the rare PML leukemia, I became more interested in learning about mesothelioma as well. It is also a rare condition, with approximately 3,000 cases each year in the United States, 400 in Canada, and about 2,000 in Italy.
