Palm Sunday was the beginning of Holy Week which lasts for seven days leading up to Easter which includes the important events below however, today I will talk about Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday or The Last Supper.

Holy Thursday is a Christian feast during Holy Week that marks the beginning of Paschal Triduum or the three days of liturgy: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. The period commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Holy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper which is the final meal Jesus shared with his apostles in Jerusalem. During this meal, Jesus predicts one of the apostle’s present would betray him despite each apostle stating they wouldn’t. Jesus says to them “woe to the man who betrays the Son of man! It would be better for him to had not been born.”

This is the day that Jesus established the sacrament of the Holy Communion prior to his death as documented by Matthew 26:26-29:

"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body.

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you; I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

And finally Holy Thursday is also the day that Jesus instituted priesthood. He washed the feet of his Disciples, who became the first priests. Today the establishment of priesthood is reenacted at mass with the priest washing the feet of several parishioners.

After supper, Jesus and the Apostles went to the Mount of Olives and here he told them they would all fall away on account of him. Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will." "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."

Jesus took Peter, John and James to the garden of Gethsemane with him. Here Jesus experienced great anguish and prayed to be delivered from his impeding suffering, while accepting God’s will. He had asked Peter, John and James to keep watch and pray but each of the three times Jesus came back he found them sleeping. He commented “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak”. An angel came from the heaven to strengthen him and Jesus accepts that the hour has come for him to be betrayed.

Matthew 26:45-46

Then he turned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

It is now Friday morning and Judas arrives with a crowd armed with swords and clubs and with the prearranged signal, Judas kisses Jesus and at that moment he is arrested.

Passion of Jesus or Good Friday (Holy Friday) – the day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary (Golgotha)
Great Saturday (Holy Saturday) – For Western Christians, this concludes Holy Week which is the last week of Lent with Christ’s death and descent into hell on Holy Saturday

La Domenica delle Palme era l'inizio della Settimana Santa che dura sette giorni fino alla Pasqua, che include gli eventi importanti di seguito, tuttavia, oggi parlerò del Giovedì Santo o dell'Ultima Cena.

Il Giovedì Santo è una festa cristiana durante la Settimana Santa che segna l'inizio del Triduo Pasquale o dei tre giorni della liturgia: Giovedì Santo, Venerdì Santo e Veglia Pasquale. Il periodo commemora la passione, la morte e la risurrezione di Gesù.

Il Giovedì Santo è la commemorazione dell'Ultima Cena, che è l'ultimo pasto che Gesù condivise con i suoi apostoli a Gerusalemme. Durante questo pasto, Gesù predice che uno dei presenti dell'apostolo lo avrebbe tradito nonostante ogni apostolo avesse dichiarato che non l'avrebbe fatto. Gesù dice loro: "Guai all’uomo che tradisce il Figlio dell'uomo! Sarebbe stato meglio per lui non essere nato".

Questo è il giorno in cui Gesù stabilì il sacramento della Santa Comunione prima della sua morte, come documentato da Matteo 26:26-29:

"Ora, mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese il pane, recitò la benedizione, lo spezzò e, mentre lo dava ai discepoli, disse: "Prendete, mangiate: questo è il mio corpo". Poi prese il calice, rese grazie e lo diede loro, dicendo: "Bevetene tutti, perché questo è il mio sangue dell'alleanza, che è versato per molti per il perdono dei peccati. Io vi dico che d'ora in poi non berrò di questo frutto della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo con voi, nel regno del Padre mio".

E infine il Giovedì Santo è anche il giorno in cui Gesù istituì il sacerdozio. Lavò i piedi ai suoi discepoli, che divennero i primi sacerdoti. Oggi l'istituzione del sacerdozio viene rievocata durante la messa con il sacerdote che lava i piedi a diversi parrocchiani.

Dopo cena, Gesù e gli Apostoli andarono al Monte degli Ulivi e qui disse loro che tutti si sarebbero allontanati per causa sua. Pietro rispose: “Quand'anche tutti caddessero a causa tua, io non lo farò mai”. "In verità vi dico", rispose Gesù, "questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti il canto, mi rinnegherete tre volte".

Gesù condusse con sé Pietro, Giovanni e Giacomo nel giardino del Getsemani. Qui Gesù sperimentò una grande angoscia e pregò per essere liberato dalla sofferenza che lo impediva, accettando la volontà di Dio. Aveva chiesto a Pietro, Giovanni e Giacomo di vegliare e pregare, ma ognuna delle tre volte che Gesù tornò li trovò addormentati. Ha commentato: "Lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole". Un angelo è venuto dal cielo per rafforzarlo e Gesù accetta che è giunta l'ora di essere tradito.

Matteo 26:45-46

Poi si rivolse ai discepoli e disse loro: “Dormite e riposate ancora? Ecco, l'ora è giunta e il Figlio dell'uomo è stato consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori. Sorgere! Andiamo! Ecco che arriva il mio traditore!"

E' ormai venerdì mattina e Giuda arriva con una folla armata di spade e bastoni e con il segnale prestabilito, Giuda bacia Gesù e in quel momento viene arrestato.
