Palm Sunday was the beginning of Holy Week which lasts for seven days leading up to Easter which includes the important events below however, today I will talk about the Passion of Jesus or Good Friday (Holy Friday).
Good Friday, a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Christian denominations include Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, Oriental Orthodox, United Presbyterian and some Reformed traditions. There may be some variation on how Holy Week is observed in each denomination, I will talk about my Catholic observance.
According to the gospels, Jesus was betrayed by Judas on the night of the last supper and was arrested the next morning for claiming he was the King of Jews. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of the region found no reason to condemn Jesus but the crowds were enraged and to prevent a riot, Pilate reluctantly agreed to execute Jesus and sentenced him to crucifixion.
Jesus was flogged, a crown of thorns was placed on his head, and he had to carry his cross up to Calvary, where he was nailed to the cross and placed between two thieves. The sign above him had I.N.R.I (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum) “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”
Jesus agonized on the cross for three hours from noon to 3pm, then darkness fell over the whole land. In the gospels of Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34; Jesus is said to have spoken from the cross, quoting the messianic Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And with a loud cry, Jesus gave up his spirit. The earth shook, tombs broke open, and the Temple was torn from top to bottom. It was then that the centurion on guard at the crucifixion site declared, “Truly this was God’s Son!”
Good Friday is a day we are to abstain from meat. Actually, when I was a teenager and into young adulthood, I even fasted on this day. Why do Catholics abstain from eating meat or fast on Good Friday? We abstain from meat as a form of penance in honour of the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for our sakes on the cross. This minor sacrifice, is a way of uniting Catholics to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, when he died to take away our sins.
Today let's reflect on Jesus and his ultimate sacrifice for humanity.

La Domenica delle Palme era l'inizio della Settimana Santa che dura sette giorni fino alla Pasqua, che include gli eventi importanti di seguito, tuttavia, oggi parlerò del la Passione di Gesù o Venerdì Santo .
Venerdì Santo, una festa cristiana che commemora la crocifissione di Gesù Cristo. Le denominazioni cristiane includono la cattolica, l'ortodossia orientale, la luterana, la anglicana, la metodista, l'ortodossia orientale, la presbiteriana unita e alcune tradizioni riformate. Ci possono essere alcune variazioni su come viene osservata la Settimana Santa in ogni denominazione, parlerò della mia osservanza cattolica.
Secondo i vangeli, Gesù fu tradito da Giuda la sera dell'ultima cena e fu arrestato la mattina dopo per aver affermato di essere il re dei Giudei. Ponzio Pilato, il governatore romano della regione, non trovò alcun motivo per condannare Gesù, ma la folla era infuriata e per evitare una rivolta, Pilato accettò con riluttanza di giustiziare Gesù e lo condannò alla crocifissione.
Gesù fu fustigato, gli fu posta una corona di spine sul capo e dovette portare la sua croce fino al Calvario, dove fu inchiodato alla croce e posto tra due ladroni. Il cartello sopra di lui aveva la scritta I.N.R.I (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum) "Gesù Nazareno Re dei Giudei".
Gesù agonizzò sulla croce per tre ore da mezzogiorno alle 15, poi le tenebre scesero su tutta la terra. Nei vangeli di Matteo 27:46 e Marco 15:34; Si dice che Gesù abbia parlato dalla croce, citando il Salmo messianico 22: "Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?" E con un forte grido, Gesù rese il suo spirito. La terra tremò, le tombe si aprirono e il Tempio fu divelto da cima a fondo. Fu allora che il centurione di guardia al luogo della crocifissione dichiarò: "Veramente questo era il Figlio di Dio!”
Il Venerdì Santo è un giorno in cui dobbiamo astenerci dalla carne. In realtà, quando ero un adolescente e nella giovane età adulta, ho persino digiunato in questo giorno. Perché i cattolici si astengono dal mangiare carne o digiunano il Venerdì Santo? Ci asteniamo dalla carne come forma di penitenza in onore del sacrificio che Gesù Cristo ha fatto per noi sulla croce. Questo piccolo sacrificio è un modo per unire i cattolici all'ultimo sacrificio di Cristo, quando morì per togliere i nostri peccati.
