Living in Italy I understand how well rooted April 25th Liberation Day is for the country. Everywhere we go there are Italian flags flown in honour of those who served in the Italian Resistance. They fought against the Nazis and Mussolini’s troops during World War II and on April 25th, 1945, the Allied troops liberated Italy from Nazi occupation and Benito Mussolini’s rule. Mussolini had led the National Fascist Party from 1922 – 1943, then the Italian Social Republic from 1943 – 1945, in parts of Italy not occupied by the Allied Forces.
On April 22nd 1946, Prime Minister Alcide Gasperi and Umberto II of Savoy who was the prince and lieutenant of the Kingdom of Italy, issued a lieutenant legislative decree establishing a national holiday on April 25th that year. The holiday was institutionalized a public holiday in 1949 so that all Italian’s can remember Liberation is Freedom.
All government buildings, schools, banks and a lot of other businesses are closed because it is time to be with family and friends.
Celebrations are held all over the country and many cities and towns do their own festivities and may include the following:
Ringing of bells and placing wreaths on war monuments
Historic re-enactments
Parades
Demonstrations and marches
Concerts
Food festivals
Fairs
Special activities at museums
In Rome there is the traditional airshow of the Frecce Tricolore, an authentically Italian spectacle by the Italian Air Force's National Aerobatic Patrol
The song “Bella Ciao” is played at the celebrations as it was sung by the Italian resistance during World War II. The words in the texts evoke freedom, the fight against dictatorship and opposition to extremism, for this reason Bella Ciao is considered the symbol of the Italian Resistance.

Festa della Liberazione
Vivendo in Italia capisco quanto il 25 aprile, la Festa della Liberazione, sia ben radicato per il Paese. Ovunque andiamo ci sono bandiere italiane che sventolano in onore di coloro che hanno servito nella Resistenza italiana. Combatterono contro i nazisti e le truppe di Mussolini durante la seconda guerra mondiale e il 25 aprile 1945 le truppe alleate liberarono l'Italia dall'occupazione nazista e dal dominio di Benito Mussolini. Mussolini aveva guidato il Partito Nazionale Fascista dal 1922 al 1943, poi la Repubblica Sociale Italiana dal 1943 al 1945, in parti d'Italia non occupate dalle forze alleate.
Il 22 aprile 1946 il Presidente del Consiglio Alcide Gasperi e Umberto II di Savoia, principe e luogotenente del Regno d'Italia, emanarono un decreto legislativo che istituiva la festa nazionale per il 25 aprile di quell'anno. La festa è stata istituzionalizzata come giorno festivo nel 1949 in modo che tutti gli italiani possano ricordare che la Liberazione è Libertà.
Tutti gli edifici governativi, le scuole, le banche e molte altre attività commerciali sono chiuse perché è il momento di stare con la famiglia e gli amici.
Le celebrazioni si svolgono in tutto il paese e molte città e paesi fanno i propri festeggiamenti e possono includere quanto segue:

La canzone "Bella Ciao" viene suonata durante i festeggiamenti come è stata cantata dalla resistenza italiana durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Le parole nei testi evocano la libertà, la lotta contro la dittatura e l'opposizione all'estremismo, per questo motivo Bella Ciao è considerata il simbolo della Resistenza italiana.
