Did I mention there is a lot of cement in an Italian house? I still can't get over how much there is! Plumbing, electrical and data runs are feed into conduit pipes that are cemented either in the wall or floor. Therefore, anytime you need to do anything to the existing home, you are breaking cement, and a lot of it! Having seen this, we opted to do a lot more renovations then we had originally intended as we don't want to deal with the dust and mess in the future.
What blows my mind is the amount of manual labour to remove the cement. Hammers, chisels, and jackhammers as well as many plastic bins are the tools of the trade when removing the cement. The labourers can be heard for hours on end hammering and chiseling. For people living in apartments, it is really hard when a neighbour is renovating. There is zero insulation in the walls and the noise echo's on forever.
This week, the team from BLU SRL placed all the conduit and pipes into the floors and walls so they could hand mix the cement and close all the holes. And boy were there a lot of holes.....We added 40 extra plugs and light switches therefore there are a lot of extra holes that needed to be filled because it isn't just the connection box that needs sealing, but the whole area it took to run the wire from one plug to another. There wasn't one room in the house that didn't have to be patched.
With the bathrooms ready, two tilers spent three days placing tiles in them and the laundry room. Funny thing, I thought the large tiles would be easier to place, but not so much as it is harder to get them level when maneuvering such a heavy piece, and these tiles are heavy.
Finally, the masonry team came in on Friday to add the first coat of adhesive and leveled the walls as best as possible. On Monday they will smooth everything down so it will be ready for painting. I can't believe how much has been done these past three weeks and the amount of materials that have to be hauled out to the dump.

Settimana 3 di Ristrutturazione in Italia
Ho già detto che c'è molto cemento in una casa italiana? Non riesco ancora a superare quanto c'è! Le tubazioni idrauliche, elettriche e di dati vengono alimentate in tubi di condotti cementati nella parete o nel pavimento. Pertanto, ogni volta che hai bisogno di fare qualcosa per la casa esistente, devi rompere molto cemento! Avendo visto questo, abbiamo deciso di fare più lavori di ristrutturazione di quanto inizialmente previsto perché non vogliamo affrontare la polvere e il disordine in futuro.
Ciò che mi lascia a bocca aperta è la quantità di lavoro manuale per rimuovere il cemento. Martelli, scalpelli e martelli pneumatici, e molti bidoni di plastica sono gli strumenti del mestiere quando si rimuove il cemento. Gli operai possono essere ascoltati per ore e ore martellare e scalpellare. Per le persone che vivono in appartamenti, è davvero difficile quando un vicino sta ristrutturando. Non c'è isolamento nelle pareti e l'eco del rumore è acceso per sempre.
Questa settimana, il team di BLU SRL ha posizionato tutti i condotti e i tubi nei pavimenti e nelle pareti in modo da poter mescolare a mano il cemento e chiudere tutti i buchi. E c'erano un sacco di buchi. . Abbiamo aggiunto altri 40 spine e interruttori della luce, quindi ci sono molti buchi di pui che devono essere riempiti perché non è solo la scatola di connessione che deve essere sigillata, ma l'intera area necessaria per far passare il filo da una spina all'altra. Non c'era una stanza della casa che non doveva essere rattoppata.
Con i bagni pronti, due piastrellisti hanno trascorso tre giorni a posizionare le piastrelle in essi e nella lavanderia. Cosa divertente, ho pensato che le piastrelle grandi sarebbero state più facili da posizionare, ma non tanto quanto è più difficile farle livellare quando si manovra un pezzo così pesante, e queste piastrelle sono pesanti.
Venerdi, la squadra di muraturi sono arrivati per aggiungere la prima mano di adesivo e livellare le pareti nel miglior modo possibile. Lunedì appianeranno tutto in modo che sia pronto per la pittura. Non riesco a credere quanto sia stato fatto in queste ultime tre settimane e alla quantità di materiali che devono essere trasportati alla discarica.
