Penne al Forno
Scorri a basso per l’Italiano
Serves: 10 – 12
Penne al Forno is the ultimate Italian comfort food and reminds me of when my momma cooked this for the whole family! Tender penne pasta is layered with rich tomato sauce, tiny homemade meatballs, hard-boiled eggs, plenty of melted cheese, and a blend spices. Baked until bubbling, golden, and delicious, this hearty dish brings all the flavours of a traditional Italian Sunday meal to the table.
I always have meatballs in the freezer and today I took some out and made baby ones from the large ones as well. You can use whatever meatballs you like.

4 eggs
1 tbsp olive oil
50 gr diced onions
1350 gr tomato sauce

Pecorino Romano cheese to taste
Shredded mozzarella to taste
Directions
Boil the eggs until hard boiled then peel and slice into pieces and set aside
In a large saucepan heat the oil and sauté the onions until translucent
Pour in the tomato sauce and add water to make 200 ml in all the jars you use to clean out the sauce
Pour the saucy water into the saucepan
Add tomato paste, basil and garlic sauce and mix well. Cover and let everything simmer slowly, stirring occasionally
Bring medium saucepan of water to boil and boil the large meatballs for ten minutes. Remove from pan and rinse them with water to remove the excess fat
Do the same for the baby meatballs using the same water in the pan to cook them
Place the large meatballs in the tomato sauce and mix well
Add the baby meatballs and mix well
Cover and lower heat to medium and let cook for ½ an hour, stirring occasionally
In the meantime, make the pasta per the directions on the package then strain and set aside
Transfer the large meatballs from the saucepan to coverable bowl to serve as a side dish
Preheat oven 390°F
To a large coverable baking pan add butter and a large scoop of hot tomato sauce, mix until butter has melted in the sauce
Return the pasta to the pan you cooked it in and add ¼ of the sauce and baby meatballs and as much pecorino cheese you want. Mix well
Spread ½ of the pasta into the baking pan and spread the sliced eggs all over
Spread as much mozzarella and pecorino cheese on top of eggs
Pour ½ of the tomato sauce on top and spread it all over
Add the rest of the pasta on top and spread it all over
Pour the rest of the tomato sauce and spread it all over
Sprinkle as much pecorino cheese you want on top of the sauce
Top with as much mozzarella you want on top
Cover the baking pan and bake for 30 minutes
Remove the lid and let the mozzarella golden up in the oven
Remove the pasta from the oven and let it rest five minutes
Serve with a sprinkle of pecorino cheese and some bread to scoop up the delicious sauce

Penne al Forno
Porzioni: 10 – 12
